The left likes to remind us that the Koch brothers are evil. It’s easy to see why the left hates them so much. They took the left’s playbook of manipulating the media and funding politically sympathetic campaigns and promoted their libertarian viewpoints. The left’s reaction to the Koch brothers exposes a deep hypocrisy in liberalism. If it’s terrible for the Koch brothers to use their money to influence U.S. political interests, then it should be bad if anyone does it, right?
Wrong. It appears that super wealthy liberal George Soros pumped over $33 million into grassroots activists in Ferguson, Missouri. The Washington Times investigated the tax filings of Soros’s nonprofit, the Open Society Foundations, and determined that the billionaire gave tens of millions to activist groups involved in the protest movement. The Open Society Foundations are a network of liberal activist groups funded by Soros with the intent of influencing economic, legal, and social reform.
Imagine if conservatives had marched in response to the George Zimmerman shooting and the Koch brothers funded protests supporting them. The media would have eviscerated the brothers for promoting hatred, racism, and civil unrest in our country. When Soros funds the violent protests in Ferguson, it’s hard to find many outlets willing to report it.
This may be innocuous. Perhaps the Open Society Foundations genuinely supported the cause in Ferguson and maybe the riots would have occurred without Soros funding the media hate machine. Regardless, this undercuts any future talking points about the evil Koch brothers using their money to improperly influence the media and politicians. If the left is silent on the Soros money involved behind the Ferguson protests, then they have no business lecturing on rightwing money in other causes.
