Jon Stewart recently attacked affluent liberals in Marin County, California who oppose vaccination. He then went on to present clips from Dr. Rand Paul and Chris Christie stating that the government should not force people to vaccinate their children. The message is that there are liberals who foolishly oppose vaccines, but there are those on the right who do so as well. This strikes me as misleading. Christie and Dr. Paul were not endorsing anti-vaccine positions; they were addressing whether the government should have the right to do so.
Perhaps this is splitting hairs. Or perhaps Jon Stewart doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Do you remember the time he pandered to RFK Jr. over the dangers of vaccinations? The Daily Show routinely rips into Republicans when they make laughable gaffes or endorse dangerous or ridiculous political positions. Yet, when the left makes an equal error, we see an attempt to portray this whole issue as a transcendent, national issue beyond partisan politics.
