Given the impending rise of the machines, there are a lot of people selling the idea that we all need basic income to survive after robots take all of our jobs. Basic income’s concept is that the government should guarantee a certain standard of living for every citizen since there will not be enough jobs in the future for everyone to perform. This argument is not new and was widely circulated during the industrial revolution’s widespread displacement of jobs. The robot revolution is far from a guarantee, but the concept has traction in certain circles.
Proponents of basic income say that this salary will permit humans to focus on art, higher minded philosophy, and to enjoy the world without the burden of searching for non-existent jobs. This article provides an alternate perspective. I remain equally suspicious of prophets heralding either doom & gloom or some utopia. Generally speaking, both prophets just want power and money.
